Apple is set to manufacture its upcoming iPhone 17 lineup entirely in India, including both Pro models. Reports suggest that the new iPhones will launch in September, with “Made in India” devices available for sale in the United States from the first day. This move comes as Apple seeks to reduce its reliance on China amid ongoing US-China trade tensions.
Five Apple Factories in India
Currently, Apple operates five factories in India, two of which were recently established. The company is ramping up production to meet growing demand in the US market. Due to tariff risks and geopolitical tensions, Apple could face an estimated $1.1 billion loss in trade duties this quarter if production is not diversified.
Trump’s Warning Ignored
US President Donald Trump had recently advised Apple against producing iPhones in India, insisting that devices sold in the US should be made domestically. Despite this, Apple is focused on expanding its production in India to reduce China dependency.
Tata Group Partnership
The Tata Group is playing a central role in Apple’s India production plans. Reports indicate that within the next two years, India could produce over half of Apple’s iPhones globally. Production is already ongoing at Tata’s Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu and Foxconn’s facility near Bangalore Airport.
Impact on India’s Exports
Apple’s shift from China to India has boosted the country’s iPhone exports. Between April and July, shipments rose to $7.5 billion, about half of the previous fiscal year’s $17 billion. In fiscal 2025, Apple assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in India, representing 20% of its global production. Initially, Apple began its India-focused production during the COVID-19 pandemic, and trade tensions with China have accelerated this strategy
